Abiword, OpenOffice, MS Word Viewer 2003

Abiword 2.6.8 and 2.7.10 write DOC and RTF files in "Word 6.0" format (non-unicode, pre Word97/2000 format).
Somehow that screws up the formatting of the header, and some paragraph formatting like alignment and indents.
To verify I tried opening Abiword files using free MS Word Viewer 2003.
Also Abiword cannot copy all the formatting into clipboard, gone are tables, paragraph formatting and other good stuff. Usually you get only text and font styles, like "bold", "underline" etc. That's frustrating.
So I switched to OpenOffice 3.1. It's much, much slower than Abiword to start, even on fresh Core 2 Duo PC. No tweaks can change that. But it works with DOC files in much more compatible way. First - copying to clipboard simply works. Second - it saves into Unicode Word 97/2000 format, preserving all of the formatting, and not having any issues with MS Word Viewer 2003.
For students submitting their work for online assignments - Abiword will screw you up. OpenOffice on the other hand will save you. Always check your work with free MS Word Viewer 2003 before submitting it.
